Every new psychic power introduced for this title is usable, in both collectathon platforming and arena fights, which gives them all purpose alongside the select returning abilities. The combat is just as straightforward as the first game but with new enemies and powers that give you additional options and approaches. For the sequel, they apparently decided to scrap the latter elements by removing the inventory screen and few item-based puzzles, and in return strengthened the core platforming and combat. Psychonauts is famous for being a genre-bending pioneer by virtue of merging a 3D Platformer with point-and-click game mechanics. The first game is practically surging with comedic genius from start to finish, but this game tends to be far dryer and cans the gags entirely at times for the sake of preserving drama. In my view though, all these improvements came at the cost of comedy. They even managed to mix in heavy emotional beats, political intrigue, and several plot twists with finesse.

It builds on both the spy movie world and family life of our main character exposited in the first game with massive strokes while remaining digestible thanks to excellent pacing. Throughout the game the story is consistently being built on with both optional and mandatory dialogue, regular cutscenes, and a few key collectibles returning from the first game. The story follows up directly after the ending of the VR midquel, however there is a cutscene recapping the events that took place beforehand in case you need it. Humankind got a Day One launch on Xbox Game Pass for PC and Twelve Minutes is following closely behind with a Day One on Game Pass for both console and PC. It should go without saying, Psychonauts 2 is the marquee title of this one, but there are some other good games on the list too. Xbox revealed the lineup for the Game Pass program running through the end of August in an Xbox Wire blog post on August 17, 2021. Check out everything coming to the program to cap off August. Psychonauts 2 is about to arrive, and with its launch date, it comes to the Xbox Game Pass as the star among the rest of the late August 2021 additions. So long in fact that Xbox has had time to buy Double-Fine Productions and build up a wonderful program for playing first-party Xbox games on a single subscription service.
